You may have noticed we didn’t publish a new piece from Retrofied this week. Well, we’re on vacation and hope you are too! Stay tuned, however, as we have some great writing lined up that you’ll be sure to enjoy reading soon. Although we’re soaking up the rays, that doesn’t mean we could sit idly by and not share another compilation of the best retro links of the week. Here’s what we found:
Fare Thee Well
We’re sad to report that Hollywood all-timer, Donald Sutherland, has passed away at the age of 88. Pour one out and watch Kelly’s Heroes, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, or M.A.S.H. this weekend.
The “Say Hey Kid” said goodbye this week as baseball Hall of Famer (and arguably the best centerfielder of all time) Willy Mays died at the age of 93.
Not nearly as impactful as the two actual humans above, but folks in L.A. are mourning the loss of the iconic Arby’s cowboy hat sign. Fortunately, others still exist.
What you may have missed from Retrofied
Ok, so this isn’t a new piece, but if you haven’t read one of our most-read articles about Video Vendor—the video vending machine that predates RedBox, then now’s the time to do it. A warehouse in Texas was discovered that still has over 100 of these machines in storage. You might be seeing these in collectors’ hands soon.
Movie Meltdown
Is NOTHING sacred? A sequel to the classic spoof movie, Spaceballs, is in development at MGM. Fortunately, Mel Brooks himself is producing.
Speaking of sequels…since it seems like we’ll never get a Goonies sequel, the next best thing might be this documentary about life after the Goonies that’s currently funding on Kickstarter.
There’s no crying in baseball! A League of Their Own turns 25 and celebrates with a new Blu-ray.
Horror movie Deer Camp ‘86 is out of theaters and available on Blu-ray. (This news does not bode well)
It’s rare we discover something new around here, but we just learned about The Linguini Incident, a 1992 movie starring David Bowie and Rosanna Arquette—a romantic caper about a perennially underpaid waitress named Lucy (Arquette) and Monte (Bowie), a mysterious, charming (and very in debt) bartender. The director’s cut Blu-ray was just announced and will be available July 23.

Think toys are just for kids? How wrong you are!
What would a Weekly Rewind be if we didn’t include a Transformers news item? (We don’t want to break our streak!) Fortunately, Skybound just shared word of a new compendium coming in 2025.
