Greetings retro fans! Admittedly, not too many links in our retro roundup this week. We may be back from our vacation, but others must still be soaking up rays instead of clicking a keyboard. Regardless, we hope you enjoy what we’ve discovered on our nostalgic journeys this week. Thanks for coming along for the ride!
Rest in Peace
- Shelley Duvall, the doe-eyed actor who was both muse and protégé of director Robert Altman but might best be remembered for her co-starring role opposite Jack Nicholson in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, died July 11, of complications from diabetes at her home in Blanco, Texas. She was 75. [More from Deadline]
- Benji Gregory, best known for his acting work as a child star on the 1980s NBC sitcom ALF, was found dead on June 13.
What you may have missed from Retrofied
A return trip home requires a visit to the mall, even if it’s already dead. "When people lament dying and dead malls, they usually aren't upset at the loss of commerce. Instead, they're upset for what the mall represented: a culture, an escape, and an excuse." Read our latest essay.
Dead, dying, or resurrected media
- PR gimmicks know no end, so it’s not surprising that the firm promoting the new Alien: Romulus movie turned to nostalgia by sending members of the press an actual VHS tape for a special look at the movie.
- While the recent (novelty) Terrifier 2 VHS at Wal-Mart and the above Alien: Romulus VHS are a bright spot, the landscape continues to look grim for physical media. Here’s an explainer about why Redbox is going bankrupt and disappearing.
- While not on physical media, fans of long-lost gems may be pleased to know Shout Factory is releasing Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: The Complete Collection on digital August 6.
From our friends around the web
- Our friend The Retroist recalls a time in 1984, when newspapers and radio stations across the U.S. were giving away trips to EPCOT Center as part of a sweepstakes.
- This Nostalgic Life recalls the joys of the summer reading program and the books they fell in love with.
- The Retro gives you all the historical highlights of the week from years gone by and hits you with some fun facts along the way. Did you know that the movie True Lies (released July 15, 1994) was the first to have a budget of over $100M?
